Moussa: WTO meeting collapse gives birth to new superpower

Originally published

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on Sunday said a new superpower popped up after the collapse of the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference in Seattle.

"This superpower is the international public opinion that stands in front of the standing superpower, creating the required balance," he said.

"The outcome of the conference is a clear message that the developing countries cannot accept this system because imposing an economic system causes the collapse of their industry and trade in favor of the major countries," he added.

"Things will start changing inside the "WTO"," he told reporters. "The third world countries should seize the opportunity to uphold their positions and protest their interests, not necessarily at the expense of the industrial countries who should take into consideration a fair policy for both sides," he said.

"The absence of transparency and imposing certain policies by the major countries in the WTO led to a stand by the international civil society and the developing countries against the conference," he pointed out.

"The industrial countries themselves were at odds in the conference and since the resolutions of the two conferences were not executed, there is no way to enter a new round of talks," he affirmed.

"What happened in Seattle gives lessons to hold a system based on cooperation and understanding, taking into consideration the interests of the developing countries, and this is what backs the WTO and the relationship between the rich and poor countries," he said.
