Morocco-US archeologist team discovers pre-Roman items in northern Morocco

Originally published

A team of Moroccan and US archaeologists conducting sub-marine excavations in northern Morocco have found an anchor and earthenware items dating back to the pre-Roman era.

The excavations by a team of scientists from the Moroccan Institute of Archeology and Legacy and the Institute of Larine Archaeologic Studies of Texas, USA, are part of endeavors to draw a sub-marine archaeologic map of old boats wrecks.

These excavations, the first of the kind in Morocco and Africa, have faced some difficulties due to the fact that the devices used do not exceed 30 meters while sand covers most of the items laying under the sea, said one of the archaeologists.

The operation is financed by the US institute, which provided a ship equipped with sub-marine research devices.
