Moroccan-Algerian relations are tarnished by a mere summer cloud, foreign minister

Originally published

The crisis in Moroccan-Algerian relations is a "mere summer cloud," said Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Mohamed Benaissa.

Benaissa, who made the statement at a joint news conference with his Saudi peer, Prince Saud Al-Faisal, at the end of the 6th session of the Moroccan-Saudi high commission, said Morocco and Algeria are endeavoring, along with other countries, to overcome difficulties and focus efforts on the Maghreb's construction.

To a question on a possible Moroccan-Algerian summit meeting, Benaissa said such meetings require preparations and arrangements. Everything is possible and everything will take place in due time, he said.

Prince Saud Al-Faisal on his part said his country is not playing any go-between role between Morocco and Algeria. "Ties between the two countries are beyond any mediation," he said, adding however that Saudi Arabia sees to it that relations between Morocco and Algeria be marked by understanding and serenity.

Relations between Morocco and Algeria are of a great importance on the Arab, Islamic and international scene, the Saudi official said.
