Yemeni parliament speaker's son hit in confrontations

Originally published

Qahtan al-Ahmar, son of the speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, Sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmar, was wounded during an exchange of gunfire at Sanaa airport between his bodyguards and Yemeni security men, SANA reported.

Yemeni security sources said the confrontation started when al-Ahmar refused to hand over his weapons and those his bodyguards carry before entering the passenger terminal to receive his brother, who is in a vacation abroad.

The Yemeni security forces tried to arrest al-Ahmar and his men, and clashes between the two sides took place and lasted for more than one hour. The clashes resulted in damaging the airport observatory tower, and Qahtan and his men were arrested.

Yemen has been trying to prevent carrying arms in open. Children of Yemeni officials and their bodyguards often walk armed in the streets and public areas.
