Sudanese opposition discusses in Cairo its position towards dialogue with the government

Originally published

Sudanese government has decided to convene the next meeting of its leadership commission in Cairo instead of moving to Asmara or waiting for an invitation from Kampala.

The chairman of the Democratic National Alliance's branch in Cairo, Ahmad al-Sanjak, said the meeting will be held in Cairo tomorrow under the chairmanship of the coalition's chief, Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani, who was due to arrive in Egypt on Thursday.

He said the meeting's agenda includes a discussion of the opposition's position towards Khartoum's response to the Egyptian-Libyan initiative and the development of the current conditions. He stressed the desire "of the Sudanese opposition to meet in Cairo in appreciation of the Egyptian role."

Leading position figures in the Federal Party abstained from commenting on the repeated talks of the former Sudanese prime minister and leader of the Ummah Party, al-Sadeq al-Mahdi, on the political solution and his personal initiative in sending a message to the constituent conference of the ruling party in Sudan. These figures confined to saying that all these issues will be discussed in a meeting that brings together al-Meirghani and al-Mahdi, prior to the leadership commission's meeting, which will be held on Saturday.
