Syrian-Jordanian electricity grid talks

Originally published

Talks started in Amman on Wednesday between Syrian Minister of Electricity Mineer Saem al-Daher and Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Suleiman Abu Aleem on the project of electricity grid link between the two countries. The project is expected to be completed at the end of this year at a cost of US $200 million.

Jordanian official sources were quoted by the Jordanian official news agency, Petra, as saying that works pertaining to the grid project were completed and those on the Syrian side are expected to be completed before the end of this year. The electricity grid between Syria and Turkey is also expected to be completed before the end of this year.

Jordan and Egypt have officially linked their two electricity grids, and the project was officially inaugurated by King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in March this year.

These projects, however, come in the course of an electricity grid project between the countries of the Arab Maghreb and Mashreq states and Turkey. Work is expected to be completed on this project before the year 2000.
