Iran to release Iraqi prisoners

The spokesman for the Iranian war prisoners committee, Maj. Gen. Muhammad Ballar, said that Iran intends to release, unilaterally, several Iraqi prisoners.

In a statement he made on Saturday in Tehran, Maj. Gen. Ballar said this measure will be implemented at the 100 birth anniversary of the late al-Khumeini Imam, but Ballar did not indicate the date for this step or the number of prisoners who will be released.

The Iranian official expressed his hope that Iraq will show a similar desire to put an end to the question of the prisoners of war.
