US Ambassador to Cairo: Washington committed to supporting Middle East peace

Originally published

Daniel Kurtzer, the US ambassador to Cairo, said the USA continues its support for the Middle East peace process, either during the rest of President Clinton's term of office or during the coming presidency, adding that the peace process was the most important item on the political agenda of the US State Department during the last three decades.

Regarding the U.S not showing firmness sometimes toward Israeli actions taht violate the spirit of the negotiations and peace, causing an unjust stance by the US side as a sponsor to the peace process, Kurtzer said in special statements to the Egyptian Al-Ahram newspaper issued today, that, "Our behavior is always and still just, and we should set up the peace process as a whole with a comprehensive shape and not evaluate it minute by minute."

Moreover, regarding the Israeli "nos," Kurtzer said, "Since 1967, many "nos" came from both the Israeli and Arab sides, yet gradually nos turn to yeses, thus, in the light of this, we deal with these "nos," but do not accept them as replies, as well as we try to put "yes" on a fair, just, and equal base."
