Spain renews backing for Morocco's economic and political march

Originally published

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Abel Matutes renewed his country's backing for Morocco's economic and political march and pointed out that Madrid was following with keen interest the political evolution in Morocco.

Matutes, who made the statement during the question time at the Spanish Senate, underlined the importance the Spanish government grants to Spanish-Moroccan relations. He also voiced satisfaction over the reforms initiated by the late King Hassan II and the constitutional amendments of 1992 and 1996 that paved the way for the transition in the kingdom and said his government has backed since the start the policy of overture adopted by Morocco and that King Mohammed VI has pledged to carry on.

Matutes added that Spain has positively assessed the signal of stability emitted by King Mohammed VI to friendly countries and partners.

Spain's stand is that of support for the Moroccan authorities at the economic and political levels, to consolidate the march of the process initiated some time ago, the Spanish foreign minister said.
