Originally published

The Egyptian Ministry of Social Affairs is examining a request presented by more than 200 civil assemblies to establish the first specific Egyptian union for women concerned with women's issues and working on strengthening women's role in political, social, economic and health issues, and boosting their role in fields of comprehensive development.

The first undersecretary at the Social Affairs Ministry, Anwar Sherif, stated that they are not going to agree to establish a women's union before issuing an executive list of new civil assemblies law no 133 for 1999, saying that these assemblies presented their papers to the ministry to form the union, whose activities will be expanded to all governorates.

It is not permitted to form more than one specific union working in the same field on the national level.
