Cem statements on Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem has expressed his country's readiness to visit Syria. He welcomed a visit by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa if the two foreign ministers' schedule permits such a visit.

In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas issued on Wednesday, the Turkish foreign minister said, "I have proposed to Mr. al-Sharaa to hold a lengthy meeting in New York but so far I did not receive the answer."

He added, "I seek to have such a comprehensive and long meeting so we will be able to talk about all matters in detail."

He added, "We have to benefit from the positive atmosphere prevailing at the meantime in the interests of the two sides."
