On inter-Palestinian reconciliation

The secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Nayef Hawatemah, said in an interview with Israel Radio in a telephone call from Damascus, "We welcome the sudden development in the stand advocated by the people's front two weeks ago in Amman. It constitutes a political breakthrough" and is "closer to stances we adopt."

Hawatemah added that the chairman of the Palestinian Salvation Front, Khaled al-Fahoum, the secretary general of the people's front, George Habash, Talal Naji and Issam al-Qadi met with Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam and in the light of talks a "political breakthrough" took place in the stances of al-Fahoum and the people's front.

Hawatemah said that the understanding reached in Cairo between Fatah and the people's front is a good matter and constitutes a step forward and in harmony with the policy advocated by the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which supports restoration of a pan-Palestinian national dialogue in order to rebuild the project for political negotiations.

He expressed hope of reaching a comprehensive and balanced peace that would be ultimately conducive to the establishment of two states on the soil of Palestine.
