Proposals and thoughts over the Middle East peace process
Sources at the US embassy in Cairo asserted to the Kuwaiti daily al-Watan on Sunday that US President Bill Clinton had told his Egyptian counterpart about several practical thoughts and proposals he had reached with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak during their Thursday meeting in Washington concerning reactivation of the Syrian track.
The sources added that Clinton asserted the need to tell Syria about these ideas and proposals immediately, so the US can await a Syrian reply during the forthcoming visit of US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to the region at the beginning of next month, in a tour during which she will brief leaders of the region on the content of the US initiative currently prepared to revive the peace tracks within one year.
The sources indicated that among the new US - Israeli proposals conveyed to Cairo on Saturday is the invitation extended by Washington to both the Syrian and Israeli sides to resume their negotiations once again in the middle of next August in Camp David under full US auspices.
