Tunisian parliament decides on constitutional adjustment for better elections

Originally published

The Tunisian deputies' council ratified a constitutional adjustment that will pave the way for the multiplicity of candidates for the Tunisian presidency in the elections to be held in October.

The adjustment aims at enabling the head of each political party to nominate himself for the presidential elections on the condition that the nominee has headed the party for a period of no less than 5 consecutive years and that this party must have at least one representative in the parliament.

The nomination papers would not be accepted unless signed by at least 30 persons members of the deputies council or heads of the municipal councils

President Zein El-Abidin Ben Ali said in last November on the 11th anniversary of his rise to power that Tunisia is finding a formula even in a transitional period so that the nomination of the republic's presidency and multiplicity of parties can flourish.
