Libya calls for African unity and coordination

Originally published

The secretary of the Libyan people's general committee for international cooperation (foreign minister), Omar al-Muntasir, has called upon the African states to work to settle their disputes, preserve peace and boost the resources of the African continent, eliminat poverty and disease, concentrate on development and sort out debt problems.

In a speech he read on Wednesday in the rally organized by Burkina Faso's embassy in Tripoli on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of establishing the Organization of African Unity, the Libyan minister said: "The most worrying for us is the continued conflicts and disputes in most areas of the African continent instead of concentrating on maintaining unity and development of the African continent, at a time when the whole world is directed towards huge economic blocs," noting the efforts made by Libya to this end.

He stated that Libya does not have ethnic problems, having almost one thousand tribes and that the several "imperialist forces conspiracies" trying to partition it all doomed to failure because Libya has realized that settling its problems lies in achieving more solidarity and unity among its people.

Al-Muntasir called on the African states to abide by the Libyan call to convene a special African summit conference in September in order to amend the charter of the Organization of African Unity to achieve unity of the African continent.
