EU envoy to visit Damascus, discusses peace developments in April
European Union Middle East peace process envoy Miguel Moratinos is due to visit Damascus on April 5.
Moratinos will meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa to discuss the latest developments in the peace process on the Syrian track, on which the Israeli government refuse to resume negotiations at the point at which they were stopped in 1996.
Syria has hailed the recent position expressed by the EU towards Jerusalem, confirming the invalidity of the Israeli position, the changes made by the Israeli occupation in the land and practices toward the Palestinians.
On the other hand, the Syrian newspaper al-Baath warned yesterday of the possibility that Israel could take action to get out of its deadlock and called on Arabs to be alert.
In a commentary yesterday al-Baath newspaper said all evidence indicates that Israeli officials are living a real crisis due to the policy they adopted toward the peace process and Arabs as well as toward the international community as a whole. The paper also pointed to the deadlock of Israel by continuing occupying south Lebanon.
