King al-Hassan II of Morocco discusses with Indyk conditions in the Gulf, Sahara peace

Originally published

Moroccan King Hassan II on Tuesday held with the US Under Secretary of State Martin Indyk, currently visiting Morocco in the course of a tour on Turkey, Jordan and Syria.

Well-informed sources in Rabat expected the meeting between the two sides to have been centered on the M.E. peace developments, the situation in the Gulf region, the developments concerning the Sahara question and the regional situation in the North Africa's region.

Meantime, a high ranking official who met with Indyk on Tuesday in Marrakesh said that Morocco is committed to its stand towards the peaceful settlement plan over the Sahara issue and is intended to cooperate with the UN plan drawn in this respect.

Moroccan sources noted that the visit of Indyk is coincided with a private visit made by a delegation representing the Polisario Front to the US. However, US sources in Rabat underestimated the importance of the visit, noting that Washington backs the peaceful solution adopted by the UN but it (US) is careful to create a sort of Balance in the North African district.

The said source refused to explain whether such a balance relates to the relation between Morocco and Algeria or it states a greater US presence in the region, especially in light of implementing a partnership plan proposed by Washington to Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

Several days earlier, Indyk denied the US administration to have had the intention to propose any initiative to contain the Sahara conflict.
