Khatami in Rome today
Iranian President Sayed Khatami will arrive today in Italy for a three-day visit, the first by an Iranian president to any European country since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979.
Khatami will hold talks with the Italian government as well as with Pope John Paul II.
Khatami is starting his first European tour in a stronger political position and more confident than at any time since assuming power as his followers achieved a strong victory in the first local elections held in Iran since the establishment of the Islamic Republic.
