Bahraini opposition calls for opening a new page

Originally published

The Bahraini opposition on Monday called on the new Emir of Bahrain Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa to open a new page and maintain reconciliation with the opposition.

AFP quoted the opposition Bahraini Freedom Movement, which takes London as its headquarters, as saying in a statement that it "hopes that the new prince will be able to settle the crisis by resorting to a political solution rather than a military one."

One of the movement's leaders, Mansour al-Jamri, son of Sheikh Abdul Emir al-Jamri, one of the main Bahraini Shiite opposition members, called upon the new Emir to open a new page with the opposition. The statement also called for ensuring security during the provisional period. It reiterated the call for backing every sincere attempt to start a political process and to make reforms by peaceful means.

The Bahraini opposition submitted its condolences on the death of Sheikh Issa Bin Salman al-Khaleifa, calling upon the new Emir to avail the already available chance in order to start a new phase.

The Bahraini opposition calls for reviving the parliament, which was dissolved by the late Emir in 1975, for the release of political prisoners and for political and economic reform in the country.
