Fighting continues between Ethiopia and Eritrea

Originally published

Fighting continued on Wednesday between Ethiopia and Eritrea near the borders between the two countries for the fifth running day.

Spokeswoman for the Ethiopian government Seloumi Tadsi said that Eritrean troops attacked Ethiopian positions on two fronts in an attempt to regain control of positions they had already lost during the four past days. The Ethiopian spokeswoman added that her country's troops still hold these positions.

Meanwhile, a high-ranking official at the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that diplomatic relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia were not severed despite Ethiopia's expulsion of the Eritrea's ambassador. The Ethiopian official stressed that Eritrea's charge d'affairs in Addis Ababa, Saleh Omar, will keep his post in the Ethiopian capital and the Eritrean embassy will stay open, noting that the Ethiopian embassy and the charge d'affairs in Asmara will continue their work.

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the Eritrean ambassador had to leave Ethiopia as of Wednesday due to what it described as "his behavior, which does not comply with his diplomatic traits."
