Chairman of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Khaled Mishal, said on Tuesday that his recent meetings with officials in Syria fell in the context of contacts between Hamas and the Syrian leadership.

In a statement to the Jordanian daily al-Doustour on Tuesday, Mishaal said, "We have good relations with our Syrian brothers." He stated that his visit to Damascus came in the context of continued contacts on developments relating to the conflict with Israel.

On his meetings with leaders of Palestinian opposition factions, Mishal said he met several of them and consultations were made on recommendations adopted by these conferences which were held in Damascus, Gaza and Ramallah as well as on forming a national committee to follow up and discuss the future of the Palestinian question.

On works of the follow-up committee, Mishal said, "There are basics from which we start. These common principles we share are the Wye River agreement and asserting the right of our Palestinian people to resist the occupation and strengthen the steadfastness of the Palestinian people as well as rejection any amendment in the Palestinian national charter."
