Eleven people jailed for celebrating Eid El-fitr prematurely
Eleven people, found guilty of prematurely celebrating Eid El Fitr, a feast that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, were sentenced to three months in jail by the Fez court of first instance.
The offenders were also sentenced to pay a fine worth 500 dh, roughly $ 50.
The eleven persons were sued for publicly breaking the fasting on the 30th day of Ramadan, while the Eid was celebrated in Morocco the day after. The offenders had also invited the public to join them in performing the Eid prayers in a local mosque.
The duration of the fasting month of ramadan depends on the lunar calendar. This year, the month lasted 30 days in Morocco.
