Germany: peaceful solution requires Syria and Lebanon

Originally published

Chairman of the German Parliamentary committee for foreign affairs, Christopher Zobal, who is also member of the German Socialist Party has stressed that just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East will not be attainable without achieving progress on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks of the Middle East peace process.

In an interview with the Saudi daily Okaz published on Sunday, Zobal noted: "We trust the European Union and through the EU - Middle East peace envoy Miguel Moratinos to revive negotiations halted on the Syrian-Lebanese tracks, since it is not expected to have a peaceful solution without moving the two tracks."

The German official indicated the interest shown by the EU toward the Middle East peace process, an interest which is built on the conviction that realizing a just and comprehensive peace in the region is an eventual need and that the land-for-peace formula is one of the Middle East peace process main foundations.

Zobal added that what is regrettable is the talks about "security for peace," at a time when Israel itself "knows the deviation from the land-for-peace principle does not serve the Middle East peace process."
