International colloquy on Islam and human rights

Originally published

Several issues related to Islam and Human rights were reviewed last weekend in Marrakesh at an international colloquy organized by the Moroccan Human rights organization "OMDH" on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Universal human rights declaration.

The international human rights experts and Muslim scholars, who were invited to the event, said there is no contradiction between Islamic values and human rights principles and affirmed that Islam defends man's dignity and calls for the respect of equality, social justice, solidarity, tolerance and co-existence between people.

They also called for the respect of cultural, political and intellectual differences and affirmed that the encouragement of democracy is the only way to protect and promote human rights principles and culture.

The holding of the colloquy in Morocco is part of the country's efforts to promote human rights culture and consolidate the rule of law.

Morocco, which launched lately a Human rights university chair, is hosting a regional office of Amnesty International for North-Africa and the Middle-east.
