Sudanese president urges UN to prevent Washington from obstructing peace

Originally published

Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir called on the UN to prevent the United States and other countries from obstructing peace in southern Sudan.

Moreover, the Sudanese opposition urged the international organization to adopt the idea of holding a constitutional conference in which all parties can participate.

This came in meetings held by the assistant secretary-general of UN, Kieran Prendergast, during his current visit to Khartoum to discuss methods of enhancing the peace process in southern Sudan.

During his meeting with Prendergast, Bashir called on the UN to convince all parties that obstruct the peace process and elongate the war to halt their interference.

Sudan has accused the US of supporting rebels in the south and arming some southern neighboring countries in order to topple the Sudanese government, where the US recently launched a missile attack against a medicine factory for alleged chemical weapon's production. Severe US economic sanctions are imposed against Sudan as well.
