Morocco holds colloquy on illiteracy

Originally published

Morocco will host on November 13-14 a colloquy on "illiteracy in Morocco: Diagnosis and Alternatives."

The two-day encounter will examine proposals for a more efficient way to fight illiteracy.

Moroccan Social Development, Solidarity, Employment and Vocational Training Minister, Khalid Alioua, had announced recently that Morocco will set up a national agency to alleviate illiteracy that affects more than 52 percent of the Moroccan population.

The settlement of the illiteracy problem is a pre-requisite for the development of Morocco, Alioua had said, arguing for a new strategy that would grant the labor class access to adequate literacy programs and that would increase the number of literacy programs beneficiaries from the current 200,000 to 400,000 persons per year.
