Sudanese minister of irrigation resigns to protest accusations of corruption

Originally published

Sudanese Minister of Irrigation Sherif Tuhami presented his resignation yesterday from the government in protest over accusations directed against him of exploiting his influence and participating in shifting a commercial bid from one of the corporations affiliated to his ministry to a company owned by his son, Abdul Rahman.

Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir ordered an investigation of the incident.

The attorney general issued a statement yesterday in which he cleared the reputation of the minister, who insisted on the resignation.

The statement said that Abdul Rahman Serif El-Tohami, the minister's son, owns a private corporation that works in excavations and that he is completely independent of his father.
