US tries to calm tensions between Syria and Turkey

The London-based al-Hayat daily said today that an official in the US administration told it that the US seeks to find an understanding between Syria and Turkey. The US opposes any tensions on the borders between the two countries, the US official said. The paper quoted the US official, who asked not to be identified, as saying that the Turkish escalation would not exceed words, adding that Washington follows the situation closely because deterioration does not serve stability in the region. The paper added that other sources in Washington ruled out that tensions would reach the stage of confrontation.
