UN chief representative conveys proposals to Iraq to settle dispute

Originally published

The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special representative Prakash Shah left Iraq on Tuesday night after he conveyed to Iraqi officials Annan's proposals to settle the current dispute with UNSCOM inspectors.

A diplomatic source in Baghdad said Tuesday that Shah did not elaborate on his destination, but he will join the talks to be held on September 28 in New York between Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz and Annan.

Annan had proposed a comprehensive revision by the UN Security Council of the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq for eight years and the volume of Iraq's achievements in dismantling weapons so as to push Baghdad to resume its cooperation with UN inspectors, suspended in August

Aziz on Tuesday announced that Iraq welcomes the UN chief's positive initiative.
