400 dead in south Sudan battles

At least 400 Sudanese were killed and thousands were displaced in severe clashes between two southern factions around Bantio city, 750 km southwest of Khartoum.

Sudanese official sources said that the fighting broke out between factions headed by Riak Mashar, the head of coordination council between the southern states, and Paulino Mateb, a southern faction leader.
