Tensions on the Afghan - Iranian borders continue

Originally published

The tensions between Afghanistan and Iran are high as thousands of Iranian troops are currently near Afghanistan in addition to artillery, planes and tanks, after Iran conducted massive military maneuvers near the two countries' borders last week.

The Afghan Taleban movement urged the United Nation to take a decision to prevent an expected attack on Afghanistan according to the Afghan sources.

A spokesman from the Taleban told ArabicNews.com that their representative at the United Nations called on UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York to intervene to stop the Iranian threat.

It is alleged that this crisis broke out when Iran accused the Taleban of kidnapping 10 Iranian diplomats and a reporter after Taleban forces seized the northern Afghan city of Mazar El-Sherif from the opposition last month. Iran demanded that the Taleban release them immediately, but the Taleban denied the capture of those 10 diplomats.
