Morocco sets up ministerial committee on illegal emigration

Originally published

The Moroccan government has set up a ministerial committee on the issue of illegal emigration, it was officially announced in Rabat.

The official source explained that the creation of this committee is prompted by the Moroccan government's desire to defend the dignity of Moroccan nationals living in European countries, the respect of international law, the preservation of assets and adherence to human rights principles.

The committee will draw up a clear approach on positions to be adopted by Morocco regarding the situation of the Moroccan community living in Europe.

The decision was made by a governmental council during which the ministers of interior and of foreign affairs surveyed the current problems facing Moroccan expatriates who the Italian government intends to repatriate, arguing they are illegal residents.

Morocco and Italy signed last July an agreement for the repatriation of undocumented Moroccans in Italy.
