Citibank closes in Khartoum

Originally published

Sudanese sources told ArabicNews.com that the doors of a US bank working in Khartoum were closed after a dispute with the Sudanese Central Bank.

The sources said that this development, which took place on Saturday, is due to the comprehensive economical sanction imposed by the U.S. on the ruling regime in Sudan since 1989 that resulted in severe deterioration to the economy.

The sources said that Citibank was dealing in the past with both companies and individuals, yet after the sanctions imposed by Washington on Khartoum, the bank was forced to deal only with individuals.

The Sudanese Central Bank asked the U.S. bank to continue dealing with the individuals or to leave the country immediately.
