Garang's movement approves cease-fire proposal

Originally published

Sudanese sources said that the Sudanese People's Liberation Army movement headed by Colonel John Garang approved in principle a cease fire in southern Sudan, in response to the new initiative started by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development after a meeting between the two sides in June.

In declarations published by the Sudanese newspaper al-Rai al-Akhar, sources said that the movement announced its approval according to a specified proposal that it will suggest during the coming round of talks that is expected to be held on the second week of August with the Sudanese government.

The sources pointed out that a high-level delegation from IGAD is to arrive in Khartoum within the next two days to convey this new development to the Sudanese government.
