Originally published

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad met on Wednesday at al-Rawada palace with Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid.

During the meeting, attended by Foreign Minister FM Farouk al-Sharaa, talks dealt with conditions in the Arab region and ways of reactivating joint Arab action to eliminate the dangers that are ongoing at the present time.

The two sides also discussed means of dealing with the "policy pursued by the Israeli government to obstruct the Middle East peace peace process."

Meanwhile, in a statement he made in Beirut on Wednesday, Abdul Meguid stressed the need for a total and unconditional Israeli pullout from south Lebanon and its western Bekaa according to UN Security Council resolution 425. The AL chief added, "What is called a security belt by the Israelis in south Lebanon is the belt of insecurity, thanks to the Lebanese national resistance."
