France for convening Middle East International conference

Originally published

France has announced that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's latest remarks in which he rejected any Israeli withdrawal to June 4, 1967 borders, raised the necessity and importance of holding an international conference on the Middle East peace process.

In a statement issued on Monday, the spokeswoman for the French foreign ministry said that the French - Egyptian initiative to organize an international conference to save the peace process seems to be more useful, especially after Netanyahu's latest disappointing statements. The spokeswoman added Netanyahu's statements contradict the UN Security Council resolutions and the Israeli-Palestinian signed accords. She also noted that Jerusalem's status must be discussed during final status negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the European Union's foreign ministers met to discuss the deadlocked Middle East peace process. The meeting is also due to discuss other issues like the Kosovo crisis and the nuclear arms race in the Indian sub-continent.
