Al-Sahaf discusses Iraqi situation with King Hussein
King Hussein of Jordan held talks in Amman with Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Said al-Sahaf. A number of senior Jordanian officials attended the meeting. Discussions focused on bilateral relations between Jordan and Iraq and relations between the Iraqi government and the UN Security Council and UNSCOM.
During the meeting Sahaf delivered a message from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to King Hussein. The king stressed that Jordan would continue to, "exert maximum efforts to lift the sanctions imposed on Iraqi people," after the Gulf war.
"The best method to achieve this goal is a good implementation of UN Security Council resolutions as well as continuing cooperation with UNSCOM," the King said.
Al-Sahaf on Sunday briefed Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Salam al-Majali on the Iraqi position toward issues pertaining to the country's relations with the UN Security Council and affiliated committees and Iraq's commitment to UN agreements and resolutions. He praised the Arab position "in solidarity with the Iraqi people."
Majali, for his part, stressed Jordan's support of negotiation and implementing U.N. resolutions and its desire to lift the sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people. During his visit to Jordan, al-Sahaf will deliver a message to King Hussein from the Iraqi leadership on issues relating to the sanctions imposed on Iraq and the UN Security Council.
Earlier in the day, al-Sahaf met with Jordan's acting foreign minister, Talal al-Hassan. In a statement to reporters following the meeting, al-Sahaf said he reviewed with the Jordanian minister the Iraqi file, Iraq's relations with the UN Security Council and UNSCOM.
Al-Sahaf asserted that Iraq has fulfilled its obligations concerning the implementation of UN resolutions and agreements.
