Palestinian leadership want the U.S. to go public with its offer to Israel
The Palestinian leadership warned that any failure in the separate meetings being held in London today by President Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright could lead to a loss of stability and security for all and the returning of chaos in the Middle East.
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that the current negotiations are considered the last chance to prove the effectiveness of the diplomatic efforts being exerted to break the current stalemate in the peace process.
Erekat urged all international parties concerned with peace in Palestine to exert their utmost efforts to protect the process and the London meetings from failure, as this failure would exact a great price after the Palestinian people and all the region's people laid great hopes on the peace process.
Erekat advised concentration on two conditions to make the London talks succeed: Netanyahu has to agree to the U.S. proposal for redeployment and the U.S. administration has to name the parties that obstruct its efforts, and this way, "Netanyahu" will think hundred times before saying "No". Erekat has asked that U.S. "introduce the (U.S.) offer publicly if Israel fails to agree to it."
