Kuwait's Sadoon says Iraq has more captives

Originally published

Kuwait has refused any Iraqi suggestions concerning the issue of Kuwaiti captives held by Iraq after Iraq attacked Kuwait in 1990.

The head of Kuwait's Parliament, Ahmed Sadoon said the only mechanism by which Kuwait can accept discussing this issue is through the implementation of UN resolutions, specifically resolution 687 dealing with this issue.

Sadoon accused the Iraqi government of misstating facts concerning the release of the Kuwaiti captives, pointing out that Kuwait is not denying the fact that it received a number of captives, but there remain more captives in Iraqi prisons that number more than 600 captives about whom formal statements were presented to Iraq.

Sadoon said that Iraq denied at the beginning the existence of any captives, yet international pressure succeeded in making Iraq confess to having arrested 126 Kuwaitis.

Sadoon said Abdul Meguid has informed him about the special details of the captives' issues and results of the exerted efforts for releasing the captives during his discussions with Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.
