Continuation of Algerian custom's employees' striking
A strike by over 10,000 employees of the Algerian Customs Service continued for a second day at the initiative of their union. The striking workers are demanding increase wages and benefits.
A union official said that the percentage of workers honoring the strike was 100%, clarifying that the services not affected were limited to supervision of products exposed to danger and damage.
The employees in the customs service demand the implementation of an agreement reached with the Finance Ministry in June 1996. The agreement has so far gone unimplemented.
Algerian newspapers reported that implementing this agreement will cost the government $5.6 million annually.
The walkout comes at a time when Algerian pilgrims are returning from performing the Haj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
