Chief Palestinian negotiator visits Jordan

Originally published

In Amman chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat asserted that the US administration has not presented any new initiative on the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

"Discussions are continuing with the US peace envoy Dennis Ross," Erekat said.

Erekat was in Amman yesterday as part of consultations between Jordan and Palestinian officials to revive the deadlocked peace process.

The US initiative to reactivate the Palestinian - Israeli track was the center of talks between Erekat and Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Jawad al-Anani.

"We discussed with the Palestinian official the US envoy's current talks with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders," Anani told reporters following his meeting with the Palestinian chief negotiator.

"The Palestinian authorities made contacts with Arab leaders concerning the possibility of holding an Arab summit to discuss the outcome of the current efforts to salvage the peace process," Erekat told the press. "The peace negotiations can only be resumed when Israel implements signed agreements and stops its unilateral actions," Erekat stated.

Palestinian authorities were unable to comment on the current situation since they, "have not received any new initiative," from the US.

"We believe that the peace process will not be completed except through honest and accurate implementation of the signed agreements," he reiterated. "We ask the US administration to find out positive mechanism to implement what have been agreed upon," he said.
