Kidnapping attempt sparks discussion in Yemeni deputies council

Originally published

The Yemeni deputies council discussed the recent attempt to kidnap a tourist group.

An armed group intercepted the tourists, composed of individuals of different nationalities, and clashed with Yemeni security forces. A German woman was hurt as well as three members of the security patrol. Six members of the armed group were arrested.

Deputy Abdo Al-Odi demanded to discuss this issue during their session concerning laws and military penalties.

According to parliamentary sources, Al-Odi's demand was refused because it was out the topic presented for discussion and because the kidnapping attempt was referred to the defense and security committee for examination.

Yemeni Minister of Information Ema El-Alim EL-Sawawa told Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram that there are internal forces supported by external parties hostile to Yemen, lying behind the recent kidnappings and explosions in Yemen.

The minister said such criminal actions have negative effects on Yemen's important tourist income. She stated that all these actions aim at tarnishing the image of Yemen abroad, and she said the government will put an end to these actions.
