Kuwaiti deputies demand application of Islamic law

Originally published

37 members of the Kuwaiti state council demanded that the constitution be adjusted in a way that makes the application of Islamic law (Sharia) a requirement.

In their statement they said the adjustment would not hurt the rights of Al-Sabah's family in continuing in their position in Kuwait.

Deputy Walid El-Gari said more deputies may sign the petition to raise it before the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Jabir El-Sabah to permit discussing it in the parliament, according to the constitution.

The adjustment aims at the second article of the constitution - to make the Islamic Sharia the legislative source.

The deputies also said in their note that Islamic law is convenient for every time and place -- it is an comprehensive system for all aspects of life. They also said that since the constitution was established, many futile attempts were undertaken to make this change.

They suggested the adjustment does not mean there would be a new ruling system because the "Sharia" did not specify a way to choose the ruler or ruling system, but the choice is made after consultation and with the Moslems sanctification.
