Islamic Salvation Front for Islamic democracy in Algeria

Originally published

The Algerian authorities released Abdel-Kader Hashany, a senior official in the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), after he was arrested and interrogated for 4 days. The government did not reveal the reasons for which he was arrested.

At the same time Ibrahim Younis, the diplomatic advisor for the FIS, said the front wants to establish democracy in Algeria and calls for a comprehensive amnesty.

In his statements, Younis called for changing the constitution to be more democratic, stating that violence costs the Front a lot, "and we have learned to manage political affairs in a peaceful way and through understanding."

He said it is time that all sit at one table to settle the problem. He said that the Armed Islamic Group wants to usurp power by violence, while the FIS avoids hurting civilians.
