Karama dam primarily handed over to Jordan Valley Authority
Jordan Valley Authority received possession of al-Karama Dam project, which was erected jointly by two Italian companies which started work on site in 1994.
The capacity of the dam is to be 55 million cubic meters of rainwater and the project cost $ 70 million, 55% of which was paid by the Arab Social Economic Development Fund, based in Kuwait. The remaining 45% was paid by Jordan's government.
During the last two rainy days there has been 14 million cubic meters of water stored in the dam, which is 45 meters high and 2 km long with a storage capacity of 55 million cubic meters.
Suffering from a shortage of water, Jordan has constructed six dams to store up to 160 million cubic meters of rain water.
The dams have stored 8.3 million cubic meters of water, amounting to 52.1% of the total capacity of all the dams.
