Morocco renews commitment to Houston agreements

Originally published

The Moroccan government declared anew its commitment to implementing the Houston agreements reached under the auspices of international mediator James Baker to hold the referendum for the Western Sahara's independence.

A statement issued by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior called on all people of Saharan origin to go to the UN Identity Determination Committee and register their names for the ballot.

The statement also called on those living abroad, who will participate through a timetable determined by the Identity Committee and the Minoroso. The agreements clearly specified the names that were in the 1974 census.

Differences had erupted between pro-Morocco Sheikhs and those who are pro-Polisario in a number of registration centers over the lists of names from the 1974 Spanish census.
