Israeli soldier was wounded by Lebanese resistance

Originally published

Israeli occupation forces continued aggressions against south Lebanon and the siege of Shabaa. Israeli artillery shelled the woods, valleys and Lebanese towns and villages adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon. Security reports from south Lebanon noted heavy material losses.

An Israeli soldier was wounded on Thursday in a clash with Palestinian guerrillas on the edge of an Israeli-occupied border strip in south Lebanon, security sources said. An Israeli army spokesman confirmed the incident, saying an Israeli soldier was lightly injured during a clash with "a terrorist group" in south Lebanon.

The clash followed an ambush by guerrillas from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine with Israeli troops in Wadi al-Hojeir, an area in the central sector of the occupied zone.

A PFLP-GC statement said its guerrillas ambushed an Israeli commando unit in the area with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. It said the attack resulted in "several dead and wounded" Israeli soldiers while the guerrillas "returned safely to base."

The Palestinian guerrilla group sometimes joins Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas in attacks against Israeli troops and their militia allies in the south.

"The Front affirms its support for the national Islamic resistance in Lebanon and the intifada (uprising) in Palestine," the statement said. A PFLP-GC base in south of Beirut where the guerrillas are believed to store weapons is often the target of Israeli air raids.

The Lebanese national resistance attacked Thursday afternoon an Israeli and Lahd's Militia position in Jezzine and reported in a statement that the attack caused direct hits.

On Thursday, the occupation forces and Lahd's Militia closed the Kfar Falous crossing for more than two hours after bombarding its surroundings. Lebanese security sources said Lahd's artillery shelled valleys adjacent to Kfar Falous in the areas of Marah al-Habbas, Karkha, Yusra, in al-Kharoub district.

Thirty-nine Israeli soldiers were killed in south Lebanon in 1997 and more than 90 injured. It was the highest casualty toll for Israel since it established the border strip in south Lebanon in 1985.
