Originally published

US professor Dr. Mohammad Mosleh who is of Syrian descent has stressed Syria's credible stances concerning the peace process in abiding by set principles, criticizing at the same time the continued Israeli policy and its obstruction of all initiatives aimed at giving the peace process a push forward.

In a meeting with reporters on Thursday at the American center in Damascus Dr. Mosleh said that Israeli Premier Netanyahu shows no readiness to seriously proceed with the peace in the region. He described the recent Israeli proposal on redeployment in certain Palestinian areas as a mere Israeli trick to waste time.

Dr. Mosleh who specializes in the Middle East policies and is a lecturer at US Long Island University in New York said the current anti-peace Israeli policies have inflected damage to the US and its interests in the Middle East region. He continued that the US has received three blows in relation to its Middle East policy and as a result of Netanyahu' s government's anti-peace policy: a breakdown in the peace process; the boycott of the Doha summit conference by most of Arab states and the success achieved by the recent 8th in Tehran Islamic Summit conference.

On the absence of the US as an honest broker in the ME peace process, Dr. Mosleh said despite President Clinton' s commitment to the peace process, he is hesitant to challenge the Jewish Lobby inside the US congress and in Washington and above all that foreign policy is not one of President Clinton's priorities.
