UN envoy meets with Libyan officials and Meguid
Libyan TV announced yesterday that the UN envoy will write a report on the affects of the Security Council's sanctions on Libya. The UN envoy held talks with the Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdel Meguid that focused on the Lockerbie case.
Abdel Meguid stated that he hopes that the stances of all parties involved will be flexible in order to reach a final solution that satisfies everybody.
The director of the UN Mission in Europe, Vlademir Petroveskey, arrived in Libya last Saturday to collect information and listen to all views that have to do with the implications of the Security Council's resolutions 748 and 883 by virtue of which the sanctions were imposed on Libya. He departed Tripoli today for New York.
After Libya refused to hand over two Libyan suspects who are suspected of involvement in the explosion of a Pan Am plane over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988 that killed 270 people, it had been subjected to an embargo that included aviation, arms deals, and diplomatic ties in addition to an embargo on importing some of the equipment needed by the oil industry.
