European Commission expert Albert Maes expects official negotiations on Syrian-European partnership to start by the beginning of 1998.

In a lecture he gave today at the Syrian chamber of commerce he added that benefits of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership will cover economic, political, and cultural aspects and will be reflected on all states in a way ensuring a secure and stable Mediterranean zone.

He continued that the establishment of a free trade zone with Syria is linked to an economic development program which ensures interaction between the two sides and helps the private sector in Syria adapt to international developments. He added that when the united European currency is enforced by the beginning of 1999, world financial relations will be changed and effective balance will be maintained with the dollar.

Meanwhile, the chief of the EU mission in Damascus, Allan Wadams, praised Syria's economic growth and its efforts in negotiating with the EU member states.
